National Tourism Experiment Center
The Tourism Experimental Teaching Center of Huaqiao University was approved in January 2016 as a national virtual simulation experimental teaching center of tourism (hereinafter referred to as the Center). The Center, relying on the superiority of the tourism management discipline of the University and the foundation of the National Tourism Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, following the requirements of “Solid Foundation, General Knowledge, Strong Ability, and Innovation” for the cultivation of outstanding tourism management talents, using such means as coordinating technology and education, independent development, and school-enterprise cooperation, and applying the virtuality technology for tourist scenarios and business simulation technology centered around role playing to achieve human-computer interaction through the creation of multiple types of “scenarios” and multiple roles that “human” play, has provided a virtual simulation experimental teaching platform with multidisciplinary integration, high simulation, no physical boundaries, and fine-tuned remote management for students majored in tourism and related fields. Also, the Center, taking its virtual simulation experimental teaching resources and experimental teaching platform construction as the starting point while adhering to the principle of “combining virtuality and reality with the latter coming first and them complementing each other where necessary”, has put forward the core idea of “complimenting reality with virtuality to promote the former with the latter and actual effectiveness through their combination” for the construction of the Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center.
Due to the irreversibility of tourist activities, immovability of tourist destinations, difficulty in accessing the core business operations of tourism companies, and impossibility of experiencing risky tourist activities or the great hazard of the scenario or extremity of the environment, it is difficult to simulate these situations in practical experimental teaching. By carrying out virtual simulation experimental teaching of tourism, this problem can be effectively addressed. The Center, revolving around the process of tourist activities, as well as the characteristics of majors such as tourism, hotel, exhibition, and planning, has strengthened the relationship between the logic of abstract tourism activities and the reappearance of the process. It has developed a virtual simulation experiment platform for hotel management and exhibition planning in collaboration with enterprises, and has built a virtual simulation experiment platform for scenic spot management and a platform for online tourism entrepreneurship and neurosciences tourism simulate experiment.
The Center is headed by Senior Experimenter Wang Jingqiang and has established a virtual simulation experimental teaching and management team composed of 37 professional teachers, five laboratory managers, three technical support staff on campus, four off-campus engineers, and two business managers. Among them, 27 are with senior professional titles, 29 with doctoral degrees and 37 are full-time teachers. At the forefront of teaching and research, the teachers of the Center enjoy a high academic level and rich teaching experience.
The Center, relying on the tourism virtual simulation experimental teaching platform, offers virtual simulation experiment courses to students (including overseas students) of different majors in the university; provides accessibility to virtual simulation teaching resources that serve multiple disciplines and majors for domestic tourism colleges and universities, creating a unique model that features multidimensional demonstration by combining virtuality and reality; and works with social entities following the ideas of mutual benefit and sharing of resources, leading to significant application effect of experimental teaching. By means of holding meetings, setting up forums, and hosting receptions, the Center has shared the resources including ideas, experience and achievements about building laboratories with its counterparts and laboratories of fraternal institutions and related institutes at home and abroad. Such sharing activities have provided important reference for the development of experimental teaching, construction of laboratories, and cultivation of tourism talents for the country’s tourism institutions, enabling the demonstration center to play its due role.
